Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Post Pregnancy care by Dr. Edmond Fernandes

Published on August 5, 2026

What is post-pregnancy care?

Post-pregnancy care, also called postpartum or postnatal care, includes the medical, nutritional, emotional, and preventive healthcare provided to a mother after childbirth to support recovery and long-term health.

How long does postpartum recovery take?

Initial recovery often takes six to eight weeks, but complete physical and emotional recovery can take several months. Recovery varies depending on the type of delivery, overall health, and pregnancy-related complications.

Why is mental health important after childbirth?

Hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and the demands of caring for a newborn can contribute to postpartum depression and anxiety. Early recognition and treatment improve outcomes for both mother and baby.

Can I exercise after delivery?

Most women can begin gentle activity, such as walking, soon after delivery if medically appropriate. More structured exercise should be resumed gradually after advice from a healthcare professional.

When should I seek urgent medical attention?

Seek immediate medical care if you experience heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe headaches with vision changes, or thoughts of self-harm or harming your baby.
